Stieber is nowadays a modern middle-size company with 140 associates located in the Heidelberg and Garching (Munich) facilities.

 

1937

Founded in Munich by Edouard Stieber Development of the roller-ramp freewheel technology

1955

Move to Heidelberg - Establishment of a comprehensive international sales and distribution network.

 

1962

Delivery of the first backstops for primary cooling pumps used in nuclear power plants Customers : Rateau –F- AEG – D; Sites Chinon – F , Gudremmingen – D.

 

1968

Development and production in Europe of double-cage sprag clutches in accordance with the Borg-Warner standard. Introduced into the general machine building sectors as well as the automotive industry.

 

1973

Development of, and patent application for, the first design of backstops using centrifugal lift-off sprags with a rotating inner race. Establishment of the RSBI series using this technology.

 

1980

Design and manufacture of the world’s largest ever backstops nicknamed “Dino”. Each with a torque capacity of 1,700,000 Nm they were installed on a 26 km underground extensible conveyor in the Selby coalfield in the UK.

 

1992

Development and manufacture of special high performance bearings for use in the textile industry.

 

1997

First ISO 9001 certification.

 

2001

Introduction of an improved version of RSBI, designated RSCI, with an enhanced torque/size ratio.

 

2005

Stieber joins the Altra Industrial Motion group of companies. Together with sister companies Formsprag and Marland, Stieber is the genuine world-leader in the field of overrunning clutches.
